Standing in the cool waters of the Clackamas River searching for steelhead while bald eagles fly over one can easily forget they are less than 30 minutes from the Portland International airport.  The alure and mystic of catching steelhead on the fly is understandable, but not easy.  Often termed the “fish of a thousand casts” the learning curve to catch your first one can be steep.  Water Time Outfitters has designed a special course for anglers who want to catch steelhead but don’t want to spend hours, days and years wasted trying to “figure it out”.  We share our years of steelhead guiding experience so you can shorten the learning curve fast!

Steelhead are not easy to catch.  Knowing where to go, when to go and how to do it are essential elements.  More than than developing a keen sense of how to present the fly for steelhead is unlike standard approaches for other species.  Even parsing the difference between fly fishing techniques for summer and winter steelhead can be an imperative separation that many anglers miss.  Strategies that are easy to misunderstand can compound the difficulties in consistently catching steelhead on the fly.   We are here to help make it easier!

Steelhead Fly Fishing Class Portland Oregon- How it Works

Water Time Outfitters has done fly fishing classes for many years.  Over that time we’ve developed classes and dialed them in so they are the best classes available to help each student.  Our 2 Part Steelhead Class is an example of just that.  This class starts with an afternoon session on the water.  We use jet boats for transportation to put us on the best fly water and to maximize your time.

This first on water session covers:

• Spey casting basics
• 5 Step Steelhead Strategy for success

The next morning at dawn is the start of the second class session.  This part is all about the fishing.  We will use a jet boat to get to the best spots fast and focus on helping you develop the skills and techniques you learned in the first session.

The second session covers:

• Fly Fishing for Steelhead at prime time- we use Jet Boat for transportation
• Personalized Coaching Utilizing the 5 Step Steelhead Strategy
• Reading water
• Understanding Steelhead Behavior

Steelhead Fly Fishing Class Portland Oregon- What to bring?

For steelhead fly fishing we recommend using a #7 or #8 weight spey rod.  Spey rods 12′ to 13-6″ long are common.  For this class we recommend a Skagit fly line with a 10′ T-11 sink tip.  If you don’t know what those are we explain the gear in the class.  We also have loaners for you to use if you don’t have a rod.  Waders, boots, polarized glasses, appropriate clothing and an Oregon Fishing license with steelhead tag are needed.

For this class we fish the legendary Clackamas River.  The Clackamas is a major river in north western Oregon.  It is approx. 80 miles long and has beautiful watershed coming off the Cascade mountains.  For this class we meet at the Carver County Park boat launch.  At the launch you’ll hop in our stable 20′ jet boat and zip to the best steelhead fly water.

Lodging: there are a lot of options for lodging nearby.  Here are a few options.  In addition you will find a good selection of restaurants within 30 minutes of the boat ramp.
