Deschutes River Guided Fly Fishing Trip
The Deschutes River guided fly fishing trip for trout with Water Time Outfitters is the premier fishing trip in Oregon. These mulit-day camp trips in a spectacular scenic canyon setting are bucket list requirements for the fly angler.
Located in central Oregon, it’s an easy drive from the Portland airport or from Bend. Excellent hatches, rising wild rainbow trout, and scenic settings put the Deschutes at the top of the list for many experienced anglers. With the beauty of the canyon and its wildlife, it’s easy to understand why this river has been declared a National Scenic Waterway.
This world-class fishery is only available to guides with exclusive BLM permits. Join us for a drift boat float trip through the canyon. We’ve been doing it for over 30 years, join us as we search out riffles, sudsy eddies, and foamy pockets for hard-fighting Deschutes Rainbow Trout.
Deschutes River Guided Fly Fishing trip for Trout- Safari Style Adventure!
After experiencing our overnight trip on the Deschutes, you’ll see why most of our clients come back every year. These multi-day floats take you into the wilds of the Deschutes River where fishing is at its best. Remote sections of river, wild trout, and big rapids make this water some of the best dry fly action around. Camping on the water also ensures that you can fish the very best parts of the hatch often right until dark.
Each evening we will float into our comfortable river side camps feature large, 14’x14’ canvas tents with high sides for your relaxing “home away from home”. Our staff floats ahead and prepares your lodging, and sets up an extensive kitchen each night. Don’t be surprised if you float into camp and smell chocolate chip cookies baking.
Fishing can be great from spring through fall. We love the world famous salmon fly hatch in May/early June. This is the biggest event of the year when big stoneflies hatch. We have abundant hatches of both black stones as well as golden stones. These big bugs get up to 3-1/2″ long and they make a great meal for trout! This is dry fly fishing at it’s finest with big, easy to see dry flies and aggressive smashing eats on the surface. If you haven’t tried this fishing don’t miss it but be sure to book early this fishery is often booked well in advance.
Jun-October the Deschutes has excellent trout fishing. The hatches change with the season and the weather. A variety of Caddis, Blue Winged olives, PMD’s and mahogany duns among other hatches are common on the Deschutes. In the fall we even get the large October Caddis. Dry fly fishing can be had through the season. Nymphing tactics can be deadly as well.
Another favorite strategy is trout spey techniques fishing a swung fly. Streamer fishing is also an additional technique that gets little press but some big results. No matter the strategy, hard fighting Deschutes trout are some of the toughest fighting trout you’ll encounter.
Deschutes River Guided Fly Fishing Trip – Logistics
The section of river we float is 35 miles long starting at the Trout Creek boat launch. Our take out is just above the river town of Maupin, Oregon. We like to pick up clients in the town of Maupin. We recommend the Imperial Inn for lodging. After meeting in Maupin and leaving your vehicle in a secure parking facility, you’ll ride with us to the launch. After the trip we get you back to your vehicle the last day. No need to worry about a shuttle for your vehicle!
Our multi-day guided float trips are in drift boats. Per Oregon state fishing regulations we float from spot to spot and get out of the boat to fish. Waders and wading boots with felt and spikes like the Korkers River Ops boot are our favorites. Be sure to get the added felt sole with titanium spikes. The Trout Spey technique is a fun and productive strategy among many techniques that work on the Deschutes.
With the full beauty of the canyon and surrounding wildlife it’s easy to understand why this river has been declared a National Scenic Waterway.
