Smallmouth bass are one of the toughest, hardest fighting fish there are and Oregon has some opportunities for them. This fishery is less than 1 hour from Portland and yet feels like you’re totally in the wild. We use jet boats to access what seems like endless bass habitat. Sudsy eddies, riffles, logs and weed cover combine to make amazing smallmouth bass habitat. This fish grow big fast eating small minnows, crawfish and other abundant foods in these fertile waters. Common bass are 12″ with some dandies 15″-20″ found on a regular basis.

Guided Bass Fly Fishing – What Techniques Do we use?
While on a guided bass trip with us you might use a variety of techniques during the day. Poppers, streamers, and deer hair frogs are some of our go-to strategies. All work well at times and the variety makes for a fun day!
One of our favorite strategies is to cast poppers from the boat to shoreside structure, sudsy foam eddies and tree lines. We use #5 or #6 weight rods to throw poppers. A wide variety of colors work from green, white, tan.
Casting streamers or minnow imitations like Clouser minnows is a deadly strategy here. We use sink tip lines on a #6 weight for this approach. We like sink tip lines to help get these flies deep. Get the fly down in the structure and hang on! A stripping motion to impart motion and a struggling minnow type of movement gets smashing takes.
Deer Hair Frogs are super fun to fish and bring up big fish to the surface. There seem to be times of the season when this strategy just works like crazy! Other times it can be a slog with few results. When it’s on it’s really on! We like a #8 weight rod with a bass bug taper to cast these big flies. They really are big and are tough to cast on a windy day. Having a heavy leader and the right fly line really helps! Here is one of our favorite frog patterns.
